Artist Statement
My work explores the balance between precision and spontaneity within the soda-firing process. I am drawn to the dialogue between form, function, and atmosphere—where deliberate design meets the unpredictable movement of flame and vapor. Soda firing transforms my pots in ways that are both subtle and dramatic, leaving behind traces of process that can’t be replicated. Each firing becomes an experiment in collaboration with the kiln—one that blurs the line between control and chance.
I am fascinated by how a well-considered form can elevate the experience of everyday use. Whether it’s a pouring vessel that pours effortlessly or a mug whose handle fits the hand with ease, I aim to create pots that feel intentional in every detail. The curvature of a lip, the balance of a handle, or the weight of a base—all become opportunities for refinement. These small design decisions connect object and user, making function an extension of care.
Lately, I’ve been drawn to altering my pots beyond their traditional roundness, integrating geometric elements that interrupt and reshape familiar forms. These alterations create tension and rhythm within the piece, inviting a new way of interacting with function. By combining the geometry of constructed form with the organic spontaneity of soda firing, I explore how precision and unpredictability can coexist harmoniously.
Each piece begins with clear intention but ultimately yields to the unpredictable alchemy of soda and fire. The resulting surfaces—soft flashes, vapor trails, and color shifts—reveal the journey of making and firing. I seek that intersection where craftsmanship meets discovery, where utility becomes beauty, and where form, flame, and touch coexist in quiet conversation.
